About Us

Owned and managed by Dr. Ryan Bell, Beaver Creek Analytical’s primary location is in Lafayette, Colorado, USA. We possess extensive experience in producing the hardware, software, and intellectual property required for conducting calibrated portable mass spectrometry. Additionally, we have deployed this equipment offshore for many years, gaining substantial expertise in geotechnical surveys, Lander/Tow/AUV/ROV operations, and oil-field assessment.

Our team attends a number of conferences annually.  We regularly attend ASMS Conference on Mass Spectrometry and Allied Topics and Workshop on Harsh Environment Mass Spectrometry, please contact us if you'd like to coordinate in-person at these or other events.

Meet the Team

Ryan Bell, PhD

With a PhD in chemical oceanography, Ryan develops systems for real-time atmospheric and dissolved gas measurements. His work aids clients and partners in fulfilling adaptive sampling strategies to help make cost-effective campaign decisions. Ryan leads research, manages projects, and publishes papers on advanced instrumentation for geotechnical surveys.  Survey targets have included seafloor hydrates, well-head blow-out plumes, fugitive emissions, anoxic basins and cold-seep fields.

Tim Short Headshot

Mass Spectrometry

    Tim Short, PhD

Tim Short has utilized his PhD in physics to develop some of the earliest underwater mass spectrometry (UMS) technologies for in situ studies of dissolved gases and volatile organic compounds in aquatic environments. Some of his work includes the deployment of UMS systems on various platforms, such as autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) and benthic landers, to investigate biogeochemical processes, track pollution, and monitor ocean health.

    Torben Gentz Headshot

    Instrumentation and Geochemistry

      Torben Gentz, PhD

Torben Gentz applies his engineering and PhD expertise to marine geochemistry, focusing on methane and hydrocarbon distribution in oceans. He optimized underwater mass spectrometry techniques using a cryotrap system for improved detection limits of dissolved gases. With 20 years of experience in underwater mass spectrometry, ship-board gas analysis, and lab isotope analysis, Torben researches ocean circulation, biogeochemical cycles, and climate change impacts on marine environments. BCA frequently leverages his broad knowledge and experience.

      Malte Höhn Headshot

      Instrumentation and Geochemistry

        Malte Höhn, MSc

Malte joins BCA with an engineering background and a Master’s degree focused on developing an underwater mass spectrometer system. His extensive expertise in laboratory optimization using membrane inlets, combined with offshore operational experience, makes him an invaluable asset to BCA. Additionally, several years of experience in geochemical isotope research bridges the gap between engineering and scientific conclusions.

        Ernie Ferrier Headshot

        Mechanical

          Ernie Ferrier

Ernie has been crucial in product design and integration at BCA. He handles transitioning subsea components from concepts to manufacturable products. With 11 years in the Navy and over 15 years in subsea design using SolidWorks, his expertise in payloads, housings, buoy release, and submersible antennae design has made him invaluable at BCA.
